Loop hike around Burr Pond

Looking out over Burr Pond

I went out for a short hike yesterday in Burr Pond State Park.  I hiked a 3.5 mile loop around the pond and up and over a hill to the west of the pond.  I followed the blue blazes for most of the hike but the 2nd half of the hike was on an unblazed trail that brought me back around.  It looked like a fairly new trail to me, at least for a mile section.  The leaf litter was cleared, but you could still feel the newness in the ground.  Much of the roots and humus were still fresh.

I started out on the Wolcott trail from the boat launch parking area and headed around the north side of the pond heading west.  There was quite a bit of ice on the trail and I soon wished I had brought my micro spikes for traction.  I did my best to avoid the ice and stay on my feet, I needed to bushwhack a few sections so as not to fall.  I soon made it to the intersection with the John Muir trail, a continuation of the blue blazed trail.  My original destination was the Wolcott Fire tower remains but the ice caused me to rethink my route.  I made a left turn and headed back.
The day was bright and sunny with temps in the 30’s.  A beautiful day to hike.  I really enjoyed the new section of trail.  There was a nice view along power lines, and some interesting glacial erratic boulders as well.

I will be back to hike to the fire tower and explore some of the other trails in the area.  There seem to be a lot of trails, some blazed and some not.
